Fun July 4th Crafts to do at home!

The Fourth of July is just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate than by diving into some fun DIY projects? Whether you’re hosting a big cookout or just want to add a festive touch to your home. I’ll show you how to create easy homemade decorations and fun games for everyone to enjoy! Let’s get into it.

Patriotic Cookout Decorations

First things first: let’s set the scene for an epic July 4th cookout. Here are some simple and fun DIY projects to make your space pop with red, white, and blue.

Red, White, and Blue Flower Arrangements

Nothing says Summer like fresh flowers. You can go to your local farmers markets and check out what flowers they have available! This way you have the best quality and support local farms.

Here are some flowers that are in season and can fit the theme!

Red/White Roses

Dahlias

Poppies

Daiseys

Hydrangea

Zinnias

Blue delphiniums

  1. Use Sharp Scissors or Shears: Dull tools can crush the stems, making it harder for the flowers to absorb water.
  2. Trim at an Angle: Cut the stems at a 45-degree angle. This increases the surface area for water absorption and prevents the stems from sitting flat at the bottom of the vase.
  3. Remove Leaves Below the Water Line: Leaves submerged in water can rot and cause bacteria growth, which shortens the lifespan of your flowers. Strip any leaves that would be underwater.
  4. Change Water Regularly: Replace the water every couple of days and give the stems a fresh trim to keep them hydrated and healthy.
  5. Use Flower Food: If you have some, add flower food to the water. If not, a teaspoon of sugar and a few drops of bleach can help nourish the flowers and keep the water clear.

By following these tips, your patriotic flower arrangements will stay stunning and fresh all through your celebration!

Festive Table Runners

This is quick and easy and adds just a little color to your spread!

  1. Take a plain white table runner and some fabric paint.
  2. Use stencils to paint stars and stripes in red and blue.
  3. Let it dry, and voila! A perfect backdrop for your cookout feast.

DIY American Flag Mason Jars

Mason jars are a crafter’s best friend. Paint them with stars and stripes to create charming centerpieces or utensil holders. Here’s how:

  1. Grab a few mason jars and some acrylic paint in red, white, and blue.
  2. Paint the outside of each jar with a different pattern—one with stars, one with stripes, and one solid color. Or whatever you please!
  3. Use them to hold flowers, utensils, or my favorite, candles.

Fun Games for All Ages

No Fourth of July celebration is complete without some fun and games. Here are a few ideas to keep everyone entertained:

DIY Cornhole Boards

Cornhole is a classic backyard game that everyone loves. Here’s how to make your own boards:

  1. Materials Needed:
    • Two 2×4-foot pieces of plywood
    • Eight 2×4 boards for the frame
    • Wood screws and a drill
    • Paint (red, white, and blue)
    • Sandpaper
    • Cornhole bags
  2. Building the Boards:
    • Frame: Build a rectangular frame for each board using the 2×4 boards.
    • Attach the Plywood: Secure the plywood pieces to the frames with screws.
    • Hole: Cut a 6-inch hole in the center of each board, 9 inches from the top.
  3. Painting:
    • Sand: Smooth out the boards with sandpaper to prevent splinters.
    • Prime and Paint: Prime the boards first, then paint them with patriotic designs. You can go for stars and stripes, or get creative with your own patterns.
  4. Cornhole Bags: You can buy them or make your own using fabric and dried corn or beans. Paint them in matching colors for a cohesive look.

Patriotic Scavenger Hunt

Create a scavenger hunt with a Fourth of July theme. Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Create a List: Make a list of items for guests to find. Examples include a red balloon, a mini American flag, a star-shaped decoration, a blue ribbon, and so on.
  2. Hide the Items: Place these items around your yard or party area
  3. Instructions: Give each participant a list of items to find. The first one to find all the items wins a prize!
  4. Bonus Tip: Add clues or riddles to make it more challenging and fun.

DIY Ring Toss

Ring toss is another fun game that’s easy to make and play. Here’s what you need:

Materials needed:

  1. Wooden dowels or plastic bottles
  2. A wooden board or crate
  3. Paint (red, white, and blue)
  4. Rope or plastic rings

Setup:

Prepare the Base: Paint the wooden board or crate in patriotic colors.

Dowel Posts: Attach the dowels or secure the bottles upright on the board. Paint them in coordinating colors.

Rings: Use rope to make rings, securing the ends with tape, or use pre-made plastic rings.

Playing the Game:

  1. Stand a few feet away and try to toss the rings onto the dowels or bottles.
  2. Adjust the distance based on the players’ ages for a fair challenge.

Water Balloon Dodgeball

Cool off with a splash by playing water balloon dodgeball. Here’s how:

Materials Needed:

  1. Lots of water balloons. My go-to is the brand Bunch O Ballons! It is easy to use and fills up multiple balloons at once.
  2. Two buckets or containers to hold the balloons

Setup:

  1. Divide the playing area into two halves with a clear boundary.
  2. Split players into two teams and give each team a bucket of water balloons.

Game Rules:

  1. Players try to hit members of the opposing team with water balloons.
  2. Once hit, players are out.
  3. The last team standing wins!
  4. Make sure to clean up your mess afterward! If you do not want to worry about the mess, pick a biodegradable option!
