On May 30, a neighbor went to check on the ranch of 29-year-old Dillon McGannon. Just days earlier, deputies arrested McGannon for a separate animal cruelty incident after he shot a woman’s red heeler puppy and sent threatening messages.
But the situation on his property turned out to be far worse.
The neighbor discovered dozens of dead cattle in one of the pens. He immediately called the Dawes County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies arrived with a veterinarian and confirmed a tragic scene—56 cows and calves dead, many of them decomposing.
The veterinarian ruled the cause of death as malnutrition and dehydration. Some of the cattle had likely died months earlier.
How the Nebraska Rancher Animal Neglect Happened
Investigators say McGannon stopped caring for his herd after a snowstorm derailed a planned cattle sale in late March. He had asked a neighbor to transport the cattle to a sale barn on March 28, but bad weather delayed the trip. After that, McGannon abandoned the animals, according to officials.
Without food, water, or proper care, the cattle slowly died over the following weeks.
Felony Charges Filed
The Nebraska rancher animal neglect case has led to 56 felony counts of animal cruelty and neglect against McGannon, one for each dead cow. His bond is set at $50,000, and he is scheduled to appear in Dawes County District Court on July 2.
McGannon also faces animal cruelty charges for killing the puppy, along with charges of disturbing the peace and electronic harassment.
